Stainless Steel Sanitary Tubes – Manufacturing Process & Applications

2026-04-23 18:20:08

1. Manufacturing Process

(1) Raw Material Selection

High-quality austenitic stainless steel is typically used, such as:

  • 304 / 304L
  • 316 / 316L (preferred for higher corrosion resistance in hygienic applications)

(2) Forming Process

(A) Welded Tube Process (most common)

  • Stainless steel strip → tube forming → automatic welding (usually TIG welding)
  • Internal weld bead is removed and smoothed to ensure hygienic quality

(B) Seamless Tube Process (high-end application)

  • Hot piercing → cold rolling / cold drawing → sizing
  • Higher cost, but better structural integrity and purity

(3) Finishing Treatment (Critical Step)

This is the key to sanitary-grade tubes:

  • Internal & external polishing (mechanical or electro-polishing)
  • Surface roughness typically: Ra ≤ 0.8 μm or better
  • Pickling & passivation to remove oxide layer and improve corrosion resistance
  • Degreasing & cleaning to ensure oil-free and contamination-free surface

(4) Inspection & Quality Control

  • Chemical composition analysis (spectrographic testing)
  • Surface roughness measurement
  • Non-destructive testing (eddy current / ultrasonic testing)
  • Hydrostatic or pneumatic pressure testing

2. Applications

Food & Beverage Industry

  • Dairy processing (milk, yogurt production lines)
  • Beverage, beer, and juice transfer systems
    👉 Requires hygienic, contamination-free piping

Pharmaceutical Industry

  • Drug liquid transfer systems
  • Purified water systems (PW / WFI)
    👉 Extremely high cleanliness requirements

Biotechnology Industry

  • Fermentation systems
  • Sterile fluid handling systems

Cosmetics Industry

  • Lotion, cream, and liquid product transfer
👉 Prevents contamination and ensures product purity

Semiconductor & High-Tech Industry

  • Ultra-pure gas and liquid delivery systems
👉 Requires ultra-high internal surface finish

3. Key Features Summary

  • Smooth internal surface prevents bacterial growth
  • Excellent corrosion resistance (especially 316L)
  • Easy to clean and compatible with CIP/SIP systems
  • High purity and hygienic performance suitable for critical industries
